Three deities of wood

Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and their sister Subhadra stand on the Ratnavedi with Sudarshana beside them. The images are carved from neem wood and, unlike stone or metal idols elsewhere, they are replaced from time to time in a ceremony called Nabakalebara — the last one in 2015, the next not before 2034. The unfinished look of the faces is deliberate and belongs to the story of how they were made.

The temple itself is eleventh-century Kalinga work, with four gates named after animals. Above the tower flies a flag that a servitor climbs up to change by hand every single day, and has done for centuries.

Read the entry rule before you book

The temple admits only Hindus, and the rule is enforced at the gate. It has been applied to ambassadors and heads of state. If it affects you, the Patitapabana image on the outer wall by the Lion Gate is there precisely so that darshan is still possible from the street — the entry rules page covers this, along with the ban on phones, cameras and leather.

One thing that catches people out: nobody sells a faster darshan. Every window the administration publishes is free, and in 2026 it went to the police about a website advertising paid VIP entry.

The year turns on the chariots

Rath Yatra is the reason most people come, and it is not a single day. The cycle starts with a public bath in June, passes through a fortnight when the main images are not shown at all, and ends about six weeks later when the deities step back onto the throne. During the pulling the ropes are open to everybody — this is the one part of the festival that is visible from the street. Our Rath Yatra page lays out the whole sequence, and the calendar has the dates.

Is there an entry fee or a VIP darshan?
No. Every darshan window the administration publishes is free and no official paid darshan exists.
When is Rath Yatra?
On Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya, in June or July. See the calendar for the coming dates and the Rath Yatra page for the full cycle.
Is this the official website of the temple?
No. This is an independent guide. Official notices and the daily ritual times are published by the Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration at shreejagannatha.in.
